Becoming a Donor

Becoming a donor is also easier than ever. It involves registering in the National Bone
Marrow Registry, matching a patient in need, and giving blood stem cells for the transplant.
Each of these steps is described in detail below.
Registering
The first step to becoming a donor is registering in the National Registry of Bone Marrow
Donors. In order to register, you have to fill out a consent form, a medical questionnaire, and
provide a sample of cells from your cheek (Click here to see a sample of the cheek swab kit).
Usually, the testing costs $50 but if you cannot or do not want to pay to register,
GiveSunsine.Org will pay. All of the necessary materials will be sent directly to you from
GiveSunshine.Org if you decide to register. All you have to do is click here.
Matching
Once you are in the registry, your profile will be screened anytime that a patient needs donor.
If it is determined that you may be a match for someone, additional blood tests will be
performed to make sure that you are a suitable donor. All costs are typically covered by the
patient's insurance.
Donating
If further testing confirms that you are a suitable match, then you will be asked to become a
donor. The entire process in completely confidential. The donation process will likely involve
the collection of peripheral blood stems cells.
